Remco had the idea to make the films and he initiated the project. As for myself I wanted to investigate the borderline between poetry and mainstream films, as a reaction to the lack of poetry in most Hollywood inspired films. The three acts stories ask a couple of questions (at its best) and the audiences are allowed to foresee the answers but not to look them up for themselves. 'Dichter op Dichter' is a way of looking for more investigative and intriguing set ups having the written poetry as a catalisator for new ideas.
Remco has directed the films on De Woorddansers and Tsead Bruinja. I have directed the films on Els Moors and Saskia de Jong.
Poetry is and should be everywhere. According to Remco poetry is really the first interactive media because the openess of it asks the viewer to be actively involved in the reading. But poetry is not only written words on a page, is a way of looking at everyday things. A more poetic approach to life keeps your brain open for questions which not always have to have an answer.
When we first got in contact with the work of the poets we are portraying we got really intrigued by it. In my case, who does not speak enough Dutch to understand exactly everything, their poetry opened a lot of channels of possible meanings. It was like a playground where I was given total freedom to interpret what I was reading. That made me very curious, raised a lot of questions and brought a lot of images to my brain. Those were developed into a sequence of images whose lack of common logic invites the viewer to interact as well.
The concept was grown out of the work of the poets so it was a common effort. It was really fun working with them because of their great generosity: they gave us the freedom to interpret and use their poetry to convert it into imagery.
